Mark & Kielyn's Beautiful Fall Wedding at Prophetstown State Park
Photographed and written by Heather Corbin, a Lafayette, Indiana, wedding photographer serving couples throughout Central Indiana.
Fall Wedding at Prophetstown State Park
An October celebration in West Lafayette, Indiana, centered on faith, family, and the beginning of a beautiful marriage.
The part I keep thinking about from Mark and Kielyn's wedding isn't the sunset (although goodness, wait until you see it!).
It's the few minutes just before they were pronounced husband and wife. The pastor invited both sets of parents to come forward, and they gathered around Mark and Kielyn. As music played, each parent took time to quietly pray over the couple and the marriage they were beginning. There was no microphone for the guests to hear their prayers. And it wasn't rushed. Just two sets of parents gathered around the couple they love, asking the Lord to bless their marriage.
I loved that they made time for this.
And really, that moment tells you so much about the wedding day Mark and Kielyn wanted.
They wanted a beautiful celebration, but they also wanted to keep things simple. Their faith, their marriage, and the people they love were what mattered most.
And on a gorgeous October afternoon at Prophetstown State Park in West Lafayette, Indiana, that is exactly what they celebrated.
A Love Story That Began with a Little Help from Family
Before Mark and Kielyn ever met, Mark's sister had a feeling they might be perfect for each other.
Kielyn had gone to a party with a friend and didn't know anyone else there. She ended up talking with Mark's sister about what they each hoped to find in a future spouse.
As Kielyn described the kind of man she was looking for, Mark's sister got excited. She was describing her brother!
So she passed along Kielyn's phone number and Instagram to Mark.
The two started talking, and it didn't take long for them to realize they had found something special.
Kielyn told me they both finally understood the saying, "When you know, you know."
I love that!
When I asked what they loved most about each other, Kielyn talked about Mark's integrity, his patience, his gentleness, and, of course, that smile with those dimples!
Mark loves Kielyn's laugh, her caring heart, and the way she brings out the best in him.
After spending their wedding day with them, I could see those things in the way they interacted. They were affectionate, encouraging, and full of laughter. They shared little conversations that were just for the two of them. Nothing felt like it was for show.
They simply enjoyed being together.
A First Look and a Beautiful Fall Afternoon
Mark was nervous before their first look.
We tried telling him he was just excited, but I'm pretty sure he knew the difference!
One of my favorite things about a first look is watching those wedding day nerves settle once a couple finally gets to see each other.
And that is exactly what happened.
After seeing Kielyn, Mark told me he felt completely relaxed, wasn't nervous anymore, and was excited for their wedding day.
I think he was just ready to be with his girl!
And speaking of Kielyn, can we talk about that DRESS?!
Her strapless wedding gown from Trudie's Bridal had the most wonderful full skirt, with layers upon layers of fabric. It moved beautifully as she walked, and she had so much fun lifting the layers, spinning around, and enjoying every bit of it.
She felt like a princess, and I think the photographs tell you just how much she loved wearing it!
Mark looked equally handsome in his formal firefighter dress uniform. His dad, Chris, a retired firefighter, also wore his dress uniform for the wedding. What a special connection between father and son on such an important day.
With their first look behind them, we spent time exploring different areas of Prophetstown State Park.
The fall colors were beginning to show, the prairie grasses were turning golden, and the temperature was in the 70s. We had a gentle breeze and just enough cloud cover to give us beautifully soft light.
It really was a perfect fall day for outdoor wedding photographs!
But my favorite thing about this time wasn't just the gorgeous scenery. It was that Mark and Kielyn got to enjoy some time together before the ceremony.
They talked, laughed, held hands, and simply enjoyed being together as we wandered through the park.
And we had so much fun!
A Christ Centered Wedding Ceremony at Prophetstown State Park
Mark and Kielyn chose to exchange their vows outdoors behind the Coneflower Recreation Building at Prophetstown State Park.
White chairs were arranged on the lawn, facing the open prairie, where their family and friends gathered to witness the beginning of their marriage.
Their pastor shared a message centered on faith, and Mark and Kielyn exchanged their vows and rings.
Then came the moment I mentioned at the beginning.
Kielyn's parents, Michael and Shana, and Mark's parents, Chris and Andrea, came forward and surrounded the couple in prayer.
Each parent took time to pray over them as music played.
It was such a beautiful moment.
As a Christian wedding photographer, these are the moments I especially love having the opportunity to witness and preserve.
Their families weren't simply watching Mark and Kielyn get married. They were taking an active part in praying for the life they were beginning together.
Marriage is so much more than a wedding day. It's a lifetime of loving, serving, forgiving, growing, and choosing one another.
What a wonderful way to begin!
An Old Fashioned Cake and Punch Wedding Reception at Coneflower
One of my favorite things about Mark and Kielyn's wedding was how they approached their reception.
They wanted to keep things simple, embrace the beauty of nature, and spend time celebrating with the people they loved.
They didn't need an elaborate reception to do that.
Instead, they chose something reminiscent of the old fashioned cake and punch wedding receptions that used to be so common.
And I absolutely loved it!
The Coneflower Recreation Building at Prophetstown State Park was transformed into a charming reception space filled with vintage details and beautiful flowers.
The tables were covered with an assortment of vintage floral linens and quilts. Overhead, strands of cafe lights and handmade bunting gave the space such a welcoming atmosphere.
But my favorite decorating detail might have been the bunting made from vintage women's handkerchiefs, many of which had belonged to Kielyn's great grandmother.
How sweet is that?!
I love when couples incorporate things with family history into their wedding day. Those little handkerchiefs weren't just decorations. They were a way to include something from generations before.
The tables were filled with colorful flowers arranged in blue Mason jars and other glass containers.
Mark and Kielyn handled the flowers and decorating themselves, and everything came together beautifully.
Her bouquet was especially pretty, with soft pinks, peach, coral, buttery yellow, touches of lavender, and plenty of greenery.
And there was another little detail that made me smile!
Their wedding cake was decorated with vintage Fisher Price Little People, complete with a firefighter and a little fire truck. It was such a fun nod to Mark's work as a firefighter!
Mark and Kielyn cut their wedding cake, and then came one of the cutest little moments of the afternoon.
Instead of a traditional champagne toast, they toasted each other with juice boxes!
Yes, juice boxes!
It was such a fun, lighthearted moment and perfectly suited their celebration.
Their guests enjoyed cupcakes, juice boxes, water, and individual snack bags of popcorn and pretzels.
Kielyn's sister, Kerington, who served as maid of honor, and Mark's brother, Ben, who served as best man, both shared speeches. Mark and Kielyn also took a moment to thank everyone for coming to celebrate with them.
And then they visited.
They laughed, talked, and enjoyed the company of their family and friends.
There wasn't a complicated reception schedule filling every minute of the afternoon.
There was simply time to be together.
And isn't that what a wedding celebration is supposed to be about?
Why I Love Prophetstown State Park for Weddings
I have wanted to photograph a wedding at Prophetstown State Park for YEARS!
So when Mark and Kielyn told me they had chosen this West Lafayette location, I was especially excited.
Kielyn shared that they both love nature and were drawn to Prophetstown because it's such a beautiful place that often feels like a little local secret.
And I completely understand why they chose it.
Prophetstown State Park has open prairie, winding paths, tall grasses, beautiful trees, and plenty of natural scenery. In the fall, the combination of golden grasses and changing leaves is especially lovely.
The Coneflower Recreation Building, located in the Prairie View picnic area, offered a wonderful place for their reception, with restrooms and a playground nearby.
I also loved how their ceremony could take place outside, with the prairie providing such a beautiful natural backdrop, while their reception was just a short walk away.
As a photographer, I appreciated having so many different areas for portraits without needing to leave the park.
We photographed Mark and Kielyn before the ceremony, and then, after family photographs, we headed out again for a little more time together.
They even commented on how nice it was to have that second opportunity to spend time with each other after becoming husband and wife.
I think that is something worth remembering when planning a wedding day.
Your wedding photographs are important, of course, but so is actually enjoying the time you spend making those memories.
And Mark and Kielyn certainly did both!
A Sunset to Remember
Oh, that sunset!
Most of the afternoon had been filled with soft, filtered light. But as the sun began to set, the sky turned the most incredible shades of orange, pink, and gold.
We headed back into the prairie grass for one last little bit of time together.
And I am SO glad we did!
The sky was absolutely magnificent.
Mark and Kielyn held hands, smiled at each other, and enjoyed those last few moments of their wedding day portraits.
And those silhouette photographs!
I especially love the image of Kielyn holding Mark's hand against that incredible glowing sky.
What a beautiful memory from the first day of their marriage.
A Beautiful Reminder That Simple Can Be Wonderful
I left Mark and Kielyn's wedding with such a full heart.
Their day was filled with beautiful details, laughter, family, and genuine joy. But what stood out most was that they knew what they wanted their wedding to be about.
Their marriage.
Their faith in Christ.
Their families and friends.
And having time to enjoy the celebration.
They didn't need to fill every moment with activities or create an elaborate event to make their wedding special.
They created a celebration that reflected who they are and what matters to them.
And it was beautiful.
Mark and Kielyn, thank you for allowing me to be part of your wedding day! I loved spending the afternoon with you, laughing together, exploring Prophetstown, and watching you begin your marriage surrounded by so much love and prayer.
My hope is that these photographs will always bring you back to the joy of your beautiful October wedding day and remind you of all the people who were there to celebrate and pray for you as you began your life as husband and wife.
Congratulations, Mark and Kielyn!
