Purdue Graduation Photo FAQ | How to Plan the Perfect Session with a Purdue Photographer

Purdue Graduation Photo FAQ: Everything You Need to Know

Planning your Purdue graduation photos?

This guide answers the most common questions I get as a Lafayette-based Purdue graduation photographer, from when to schedule your cap and gown session to what to wear and where to take your pictures.

My name is Heather, and I’m not just an experienced Purdue photographer; I’m also a third-generation Purdue graduate who loves celebrating this milestone with other Boilermakers. Every session feels like coming home.

When is the best time to take Purdue SPRING graduation photos?

  • The most popular time for Purdue graduation sessions is late March through early May, before the official graduation weekend crowds hit campus. Evenings offer beautiful golden light, but mornings are great if you’d like fewer people in the background.

  • If you want spring blooms, aim for mid-to-end of April.

  • Campus gets extremely busy the last week of April and all graduation weekends.

  • To avoid long waits and crowded backdrops, schedule your session in the first half of April.

  • To reserve your preferred date, reach out at least 6-8 weeks in advance as spring is my busiest season for Purdue cap and gown photos.

When should I schedule SUMMER or WINTER graduation photos?

Summer graduation sessions are more flexible since the campus is quiet and fewer students graduate then. During summer, I offer weekday morning or evening sessions (weekends are often reserved for weddings).

For winter graduation, I recommend scheduling your photos in the fall when the colors are vibrant and the weather is mild. October is ideal, but it’s also peak family session season — so reach out 6–8 weeks ahead to secure your spot.

When should I contact you to book Purdue graduation pictures?

Spring dates book fast. Contact me in January or February if you want the most popular April or early May session dates

For summer or fall, reach out a month or two in advance to ensure flexibility with scheduling.

What’s the best time of day for Purdue graduation photos?

  • Evenings are popular for golden light, but morning sessions help you avoid crowds, especially near the Engineering Fountain, Arches, and Bell Tower.

  • If possible, schedule your session for April as May gets HECTIC!

How long does a Purdue graduation session take?

I offer three session options:

  • 30 minutes: perfect for a quick session with two close locations

  • 60 minutes (most popular): ideal for three classic Purdue spots

  • 2 hours (deluxe): best for exploring multiple locations or group photos

What should I wear for Purdue graduation pictures?

  • Cap & Gown: Steam or iron it. Wrinkles show up more than you’d think.

  • Outfit Underneath: Choose something timeless like a dress, suit, or business casual outfit.

  • Shoes: You’ll walk a lot; heels are fine, but pack flats.

  • Purdue Gear: Bring a hoodie or T-shirt for relaxed shots.

What are the best photo locations on Purdue’s campus?

The most popular spots include:

  • Engineering Fountain

  • Bell Tower

  • Purdue Memorial Union

  • Gateway to the Future Arch

  • Hovde Hall

Each has its own personality — I’ll help you plan the best route based on light and session length.

Can I include friends or family in my graduation photos?

Absolutely! Parents and close friends are welcome for a few photos. Celebrating with family is a special thing!

You can include up to three friends at no extra cost.

For larger groups, book a 2-hour session and split the cost for better variety and value.

Can we do a champagne spray photo?

Definitely! Champagne spray pictures are always fun. We’ll do them at the end of your session so your outfit stays clean.
